The lean, graceful hound loped elegantly through the dense forest swathed with streaks of pearly, translucent fog. Her short, chocolate fur bristled warily, bright, cerulean eyes darting back and forth as she journeyed on.
Large, pointed ears were pinned back to her skull in obvious anxiety, as the skittish female shied at every noise, at every rustle in the undergrowth. Her heart drummed an uneven rhythm in her skinny chest.
Ba-dum. Ba-dum. Ba-dum.
Holy Mother of the Moon. All wanted to do was to get out of this blasted forest, which seemed as though it didn't want to let her leave, Her whipcord thin tail lashed ferociously, as liquid, aquamarine eyes swept the small clearing she found herself in. Sighing dejectedly, Isis dropped on her side with a muffled hmrph, expelling her breath in one great sigh.
This clearing looked familiar... She must have been here before. Which meant - wait for it - she had been going round this blasted terrain in circles. A low howl reach her ears, and the skinny femme pulled herself tighter, coiling up in a little ball upon the grass in alarm.
This whole forest was spooked. She had sworn she could see shadows shifting in the corners of her eyes whenever she looked, and when she turned her head to gaze directly upon it, it was gone!
A low whimper escaped her throat unbidden. At times like these, she really wished her brother were here. At least with him by her side, nothing ever seemed quite so bleak.
. K a j y n n . Kajynn didn't know why, but lately she felt the need to avoid the pack lands for the time being. Or perhaps it was a message from the Gods, speaking to her through process of thought to come here and pray to them, or the ever more tempting option -- to slay in their name. The musing collie sighed dreamily at the thought, an easy smile gracing her sharp features as she crept about the ghostly forest she'd come to know and love so well. It was her preferred killing spot. Yes, though she hadn't exactly felt the need to do so lately, she enjoyed the rush of the kill and the strange sense of pleasure it brought once she had finished the job. There was simply something about watching the life slowly drain drop by drop out of one's dying victim, the wheezing gasps like music to her ears whilst she whispered her thanks and allowed Avteus to guide their spirit into the afterlife. And that feeling of joy and peace that Kajynn rarely felt would make its way through her veins again. It was threatening to bubble to the surface even now. And the warrior simply couldn't deny that she liked it more than anything. It was an overwhelming emotion that consumed her body like the force of Fenris himself. Twas a true shame most dogs had the sense to stay away from the forest tonight.
Speaking of which, this midnight travel had made the atmosphere change considerably from that of late noon. The night-owls had come out to hunt, the thick fog had settled beautifully high above the ground, and the moon. Oh, the moon. No dog could resist the alluring call of the alabaster sphere. She remembered once hearing an old Shaman say that all canines were sons and daughters of the moon, not only wolves (though perhaps that was their own bias speaking). Regardless, Kajynn stopped pressing through the forest for a moment to look up at the light for a moment. "Oh, Fenrir, what a lovely moon you've risen this night. Truly none of the Gods could match its glory.” She sang, her hauntingly baritone vocals looming in the air before she moved on again.
As she began padding forward, the hoot of a night-owl reached the Kajynn’s ears. Under normal conditions, the female would have passed it off as just that, until she heard a soft whimper, like the sound of a helpless pup huddling close to its den-mother. But this was no pup, she was sure of that -- most likely a naive soul lost in the wilderness. After all, any forest-dog probably would have been concealed and soundless in their movements. But Kajynn was well above the novice status in endeavors like this one. The Gods have being listening to my prayers. This shall be fun. But even still, where was the fun in simply killing? She decided she could afford to play a little game tonight; she was sure they wouldn't mind. Besides, she was all too experienced sacrificing in these lands before. This dog was definitely new. Why not have a little fun and toy with her a little bit? It would be fun, even if only for herself. She felt that she deserved it under the current circumstances, she was fasting after all, and Ithys would surely appreciate the effort of self-control.
She finally got within striking distance of whom she now realized was a female, and her scent hit her purely in the face. She absorbed it, and then crept up behind the she-dog, with the steady expression of a hunter. Kajynn didn't bother the smother her own smell now or try to quiet her steps even remotely. She purposely snapped a small fallen twig to catch her attention and ducked back into the shadows. A rather effective technique she used to lure out the more tenacious of dogs, to separate those from the simpler targets. “Oh come now..." Her voice eased smoothly into the air like honey, echoing quite nicely through the night. "Didn't your mother ever tell you to stay out of the woods?" The collie weaved through the trees swiftly, her naturally agile form perfectly suited to keeping silent as she moved. "You wouldn't want to run into the big bad wolf now, do you, dear?” She cooed from behind the little female. She made her steps slow and deliberate, ivories gleaming in the light of the moon whilst she spoke. “And I simply cannot imagine what a lovely blue-eyed dame like you would find appealing about the deep, dark forest like this.” Kajynn gave a deceptively sweet and gentle chuckle as she wrapped herself around the sighthound's skinny bodice like a snake. "Please, do tell."
Ever since her puppy days, Isis had been inseparable from her brother. Bought together by that foul man, Enno had been her only comfort in the days past, back when they had been left alone, shivering in the cold and wet, certain that they would die before the sun would rise.
He had given her hope - hope that they would escape; hope that life would change for the better; that there were such things as happy endings.
And now, trapped inside this cursed forest, Isis had never wished harder, that he brother was her with her. Fog rose, thick and dense, from the ground, clouding her keen vision, and muffling her sense of smell.
The previously distinguishable scents were jumbled together, the wetness of the fog, along with the lush greenery of the forest.
The cold moon hung high in the sky, as the nightlife began to stir. Crickets chriped, owls hooted, bushes rustled, the sounds coming to a rising crescendo, overpowering for a house-bred dog who had never before spent the night in the woods.
Isis' heart pounded in fear, her striking cerulean eyes darting around in the pearly whiteness, unable to pierce through the dense fog. The scents and sounds jumbled together - nothing like the clear, crisp, sterile scents of a human household. Here, everything seemed to be white noise - and it scared the female to death.
Her lean, regal head whipped up instantaneously, the rest of her body still as death, as she struggled to identify the source of the sound. Nostrils flared a little, as the dog helplessly searched, unsteadily rising to her paws on those lean legs, quivering slightly.
"W-who's there?" she called out, taking an uncertain step forward. "I heard you. I mean you no harm, I'm just lost, and if you could-"
She trailed off, catching her breath sharply as a haunting voice rolled through the clearing, heavy and seductive, with almost a feline purr to it. Isis shivered in mingled anticipation and dread, her blue eyes still searching.
Where was the owner of the voice? Why wouldn't she reveal herself?
"I-" she faltered, backing away, large ears flat to her head. She moved with the easy grace innate in her breed, long limbs quickly carrying her backwards.
Her tail brushed something furry, and the patronisingly sweet voice that sounded suddenly behind her caused Isis to help in terror, spinning around and scrambling backwards, entire body stiff and poised.
Isis continued backing away from the unnerving female, her strangely enticing voice and beautiful pelt, as the other stalked closer, predatory, not unlike a wolf in her movements. Movements that Isis had never before seen in a dog.
Isis lowered her head in easy submission, terror infusing every pore on her body. The thin pelt shivered in the moonlight, shining beads of moisture clinging on to the gleaming chocolate fur.
She backed into a tree, and stood stock-still, voice completely dried up, as she helplessly watched the female draw closer and closer. Her mind blanked, as she struggled for the words that wouldn't come.
Soft, silky fur that only a collie could have brushed her own thin pelt, as the sturdy dog circled her closely, pressing against her so familiarly. She flinched, whining deep in her throat in fear, legs trembling as she fought not to collapse upon the damp ground.
"I-" she licked her lips, aqua eyes beautiful and luminescent, large and liquid in her thin, regal face.
"I-I got lost."
Her voice small and lost, it barely echoed in the dense fog that slowly covered them both.
