The little Dhole's paws mashed clumsily on the ground. She had been walking for days and was now scavenging for some more berries. In her mind, she longed for her mother - she had always brought her daughter a warm, tasty mouse or sometimes even a big bird! She would let the pup take her time plucking out all the feathers and making it perfect before they would split the meal up. But, that had been over a month ago. It had been a long time since the little pup had eaten mink, let alone had she had any milk. Her mother said she was too old for it anyway, but the pup had drank it more out of comfort, than out of needing it.
The night had come faster than she expected. The moon was only a crescent and now she was even more lost. Why had she been so stupid to go off and look for her mom? She had always come back before. Why had she felt so inclined to go and look for her that time around? Whoosh What was that?! The little pup spun around, her ears pinning back against her head as though to block out the sound. She was lost, it was dark, and now was something following her? She could just make out the leaves crunching against the ground as though big, heavy steps were being taken. In her panic, the pup sprinted toward a tree. She used her long legs to pull herself up and she curled into the small hole in the oak tree. Everything seemed dead, but now she could hear a low moaning. Oh, how dearly she wanted the sun to come back up, or the moon could come back out.
The sounds still seemed quite a distance, so she decided to sound her own alarm. In her throat, she let out a high pitched whistling sound. She rarely barked and whined, it wasn't exactly the Dhole nature. So her mother had taught her this pretty little whistle. This pup used it when she was happy and playing or when she was scared and lost as a distress call - like she was doing now. And she kept whistling, loud enough, yet not too loud. Whistling until the moans seemed close enough to hear, and then she fell silent, pushing herself deep into the oak tree. Her large ears were pulled flat, trying her best to block out those horribly scary sounds. She almost did whine at one point, but her common sense stopped her. She just laid there, shaking, waiting for this creature to either fade away or someone to rescue. Or there was always the third option - it would find her and eat her. But, she was really hoping against that one. I'm thinking I'm talking. Hex Code#19e69c

The Ghostly Forest hardly spooked Trick. Granted, his fur was standing up, but that didn't mean he was afraid to be here. It was more like he just got an uneasy feeling that made him ready to pounce at any moment.
The large male had just been walking, the leaves crunching softly beneath his paws, when he had first heard the noise he couldn't quite describe. It was leaves mixed with moans and whimpers. He wasn't sure if it was one creature or more than one, but he figured it really wouldn't hurt to investigate. After all, he had never believed in ghosts in the first place. They were just a silly excuse to scare canines to get a moment of laughter for yourself. His mom had believed in ghosts with her whole heart so she would constantly try to strike fear in the hearts of her children. Trick could do nothing but ignore his ignorant mother and just block out her words. His siblings hadn't been as smart as he was.
As Trick's feet dragged him closer, he heard a high pitched whistle ring through his pricked ears. What a curious thing, he'd never heard a thing like that. The curiosity in his chest began to itch: rushing over his lungs and muscles, forcing him forward at a faster pace. Finally, he found what he was looking for just as the whistling stopped: an old, dark oak tree with a whole in the bark just a foot or two off the ground: Trick could clear that no problem, although he couldn't climb a tree so that was out of the question. He walked to the base of the tree, sniffing the ground trying to analyze the scent he was taking in. He literally had no clue what he was smelling, but he knew if was female and dog-like.
Trick jumped onto the bark: his paws clinging to the bark with his long, darkly-colored nails. He poked his head into the hole, glancing down to see a dark shape. It was a bad angle, though, so he couldn't quite get a good look. "Hey, what are you doing way up here?"
Notes: Hope you don't mind me joining in! Sorry this is so sucky, though. I haven't written in a couple months.

When her whistling had finally died down, the little canine found herself exhausted. The tree was damp and cold, but at least it was keeping her safe from whatever else was out there. But, just as she was beginning to feel safe, she heard rough claws hit the bark and a shape popped inside. A sharp whistle that was almost a bark escaped her throat and she dug at the leaves, trying to hide herself even more. Even with her dark pelt, the moonlight was too bright for her to completely hide herself.Hey, what are you doing way up here? The creatures voice said and the Dhole pup could see tell that the 'monster' was a he. If her ears could have flattened anymore, they would have. But, they were so plastered to her head one would think they had been painted on there.
For a while she was silent. Continuing to scurry and dig, trying to hide herself. But, eventually, common sense kicked in and she knew even if she hid, this male already knew she was in there. Sighing lightly, she tried to control the shivers threatening to shatter her body at any time. "H-Hid-Hiding." She managed to get out through a series of stutters she was trying to control. In her new laying down position, she was able to see the other canines color in the moonlight, even if he couldn't see hers. He was a light tan and awfully tall compared to her if he could stand up against the tree. The pup couldn't have done that, she had to actually climb it, but her pointy claws allowed that easily. "Please don't h-hurt m-m-me." She muttered nervously, keeping her voice low and quiet, therefore if any of those moaning creatures were nearby they wouldn't hear her. S I'm thinking I'm talking. "H-Hid-Hiding." the creature from within the tree trunk piped up, her voice small and distant: dripping with youth and fear. She must have been a young animal, whatever she was. Trick twisted his tail lightly, pondering his next move, but he was softly interrupted by the female speaking again, "Please don't h-hurt m-m-me."
Trick's ears pricked at her words, a slight chuckle parting his lips. The creature probably couldn't see him very well and yet she was already making assumptions that he would hurt her. She was definitely young, possibly even under a year old. "Don't you worry about me, sweetheart. I'm harmless, even if I tried not to be. I won't hurt you, I swear." The male pushed himself from the trunk, allowing the female to breath for a minute before he would begin talking to her again. He turned his attention back to his surroundings, looking around. The trees stood high above him, dropping over his head, threatening to crush him with just one limb. It almost made him feel weak knowing how much power trees would have over him if they could animate. The trunks of these trees were particularly thin: they must have been the kind that was tall and thin rather than being short and thick.
The dark bark around him loomed, teasing him with images of what could be there: of what probably should be there but wasn't. There was no one, it was eerily silent. And.... scary. All the little crevices and the shadows that the devil's spawn could be playing in made Trick stand on edge. It wasn't safe here: he had to get the child out of here. He turned his nose back to the dark hole in the tree, "What do you say to me escorting you out of these words? I'm sure you don't want to spend the night here, hmm?"

The pup had her ears pinned so tightly to her head that she almost didn't even catch the canine outside when he spoke again. "Don't you worry about me, sweetheart. I'm harmless, even if I tried not to be. I won't hurt you, I swear." His voice was calming and the little female wanted to believe him. But, he was out there, was those weird creatures that moaned. For all she knew, they were taking over the male from the inside out and as going to do the same to her the second she left the safety of the tree trunk. But, to her surprise, the male bounced down from the tree and seemed to disappear for a few moments. The only reason she was aware of him still being there was that his scent was as strong as ever. Still, the Dhole remained quiet, tail tucked and ears pinned, waiting for something else, some other kind of sign.
"What do you say to me escorting you out of these words? I'm sure you don't want to spend the night here, hmm?" The males voice came again and she did have to give him the benefit of the doubt. Yes, she sure as hell wanted out of there. But, then again, didn't hell wait on the other side of the trunk as well? She assumed she wouldn't know of she didn't try to figure it out. Slowly, she allowed her ears to rise on her head, flicking them around to see what she could hear. So far, there was no moaning sound that she was able to find and cautiously, she moved herself so that she could see outside the trunk. The pup did her best to make sure no leaves stirred, and she popped her head out completely, looking from side to side to see if her well-built ears could catch anything. Her species was known to have stronger connection to hearing than most canines, and she couldn't be more proud in that.
Ears flicking, she carefully squeezed herself out of the hole, clinging to the side of a tree to look like a squirrel. And she probably did, with her thin tail that fluffed out at the end It was an interesting sight. Being almost all brown yet a jet black tuft of fluff at the end of her tail that would just grow as she got older. She instinctively turned herself like she was going to go down the tree backwards, but instead, pulled herself up a little higher, sharp claws holding her steadily to the tree. She turned her head, looking down to see the male was a slender-built, tan furred canine. He looked swift, so her chances of outrunning him were slim. And she defiantly wasn't strong enough for a fight. The Dhole turned herself face down again, her claws sinking deeper into the bark of the tree and her tail fluffed out in her own nerves. "How do I know I can trust you?" Surprisingly, her voice held firm. But, then again, she was high up, tightly clinging to the tree. Her claws would allow her to go as high as she needed, and in her luck, that was the thing that most canines couldn't do.

"How do I know I can trust you?" the little female spoke as she clung to the tree. Trick winced slightly, wondering how such a stunt could be accomplished by a little canine. He could tell she was a canine by the way her face was round in the jaws with a sharp point of a nose, oval-shaped dark eyes, and the rounded tips of her ears. But, even though she looked like a dog in the face, it still would have been hard to recognize her as a dog if Trick hadn't been prepared to look for those differences. She almost looked like a dog, bear, and weasel hybrid. Her body was brown and slightly low to the ground with a long, black tipped-tail brushing up against the dark bark of the tree in front of him. She wasn't all that attractive to the male but, then again, he had never been attracted to anything but a fellow canine so he wasn't all sure of how he should be reacting. Turning his attention back to the pups question, Trick shrugged. It was a good question not many people thought to ask before running off with a stranger. Even Trick had failed to ask that question any time he'd met a suspicious character. He figured that, in this situation, giving the female his name really wouldn't help him. Trick had been shortened from Trickster: the name his mother had given him due to his unruly nature as a child. Eventually, though, the male had grown out of that name and dropped the "ster" in his name. At least Trick was better than Trickster. The male's eyes met the pup's as he spoke to her, "My name is Trick. I'm new around here. I know you can't trust me since I have no reasons to give you, but you can trust that any situation we get stuck in I'm on your side."He wasn't sure how much of a comfort that was to the female, but at least he was trying. He honestly had no good reasons why the pup should trust a complete stranger when she was along in this world. Or, at least, she looked like she was. He had yet to see her mother or father come around so he'd just assumed. He spoke once more to the female, "Fair enough? I could always leave you alone if that's what you'd prefer."Athena♥

Sometimes, the Dhole could almost swear she was a feline of some sort, maybe even a rodent. But, she figured as she grew, she would probably outgrow her ability to climb the trees. However, it was quite sad since it was a great way to escape her enemies. When the male began to speak again, the pup tightened her claws into the tree, but lifted her round ears to listen to him better. "My name is Trick. I'm new around here. I know you can't trust me since I have no reasons to give you, but you can trust that any situation we get stuck in I'm on your side." Her head cocked slightly at his way of gaining her trust, but his next sentenced won her over. She didn't want to be alone anymore.
As he spoke of leaving, she arched her body up. "Wait!" She whistled, her voice sounding almost like the ones the humans make among the trees. She couldn't help it. Whenever she wanted to whine or shout - she whistled. If she was scared - she whistled. If she was excited - she whistled. It was a strange sound, but she knew it was common in the species she was. Her mother had used the whistle-like sound to summon her when the two had gotten separated. All but the last time. The little pup scratched her claws as she allowed them to slide down the tree at a safe pace, stopping a little before the bottom in caution before she let go and dropped to the ground. Her tiny paws bounced onto the soft grass below and she looked up at the canine.
His confusion in her breed was obvious and it made the female giggle just a bit - though it was almost a whistling sound once again. "I'm Xena. Zee-nah," She sounded out, lifting her puffy brown and black tail and giving it a little wag. "I'm a Dhole, the only of my kind in this area. Besides my mama, but she's gone now. You could say I'm Unique." A twist of her muzzle which could almost be considered a sneer or a smirk. "What are you, Trick?" A light smile now, and she hopped her paws, as though she were indicating that she wanted to get going.
